That becouse we all live in monopolistic world. Not just capitalism, but monopolism take a place here. Google, Microsoft and Apple just conquer world without any battle. Internet is a source of free information and good means of surveillance, if you not an criminal, anarchist, true commie, real democrat or liberal don't be affraid, no one cares about you.

Yeah, old Internet *did* have its drawbacks, but it was a lot simpler back then. It's too industrialized right now. Then again, that's the price for technological advancement.
